Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
·         Reviewed missing addends (4 + ___ = 10)
·         Introduced missing numbers with subtraction (9-___=4)
·         Introduced a little bit of decomposition

In reading we:
·         Reached 18 minutes of reading independently and earned extra recess
·         Started working on retelling

In writing we:
o   Finished up our small moment writing!

In Fundations we:
·         Talked about the –an, -am, -all glued sounds
·         We had a check-in on Thursday

Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
·         Introduced missing addends (4 + ___ = 10)
·         Reviewed fact families
·         Continued with word problems

In reading we:
·         Reached 15 minutes of reading independently and earned extra recess
·         Introduced all of our reading strategies and got book marks to help remind us

In writing we:
·         Continued writing about small moments
o   We focused on making our writing come alive and bringing our characters to life

In Fundations we:
·         Talked about bonus letters and the –all glued sound
·         We had a check-in on Friday

In social studies, we talked about voting and presidents of the past and present.

In science, in the beginning of the week we took home our plant seeds.

October 21, 2016
Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
·         Mixed addition and subtraction
·         Introduced doubles facts
·         Had a mid-unit check-in

In reading we:
·         Reached 14 minutes of reading independently
·         Picked reading spots throughout the classroom
·         Began picking just right books on our own

In writing we:
·         Continued writing about small moments
o   We focused on writing crafts like bolded words and uppercase letters, speech bubbles, adding details, and beginnings

In Fundations we:
·         Had our last week in Unit 3 which introduced digraphs
·         We had a check-in on Friday

In science, we continued our plant unit. Our lavender plants sprouted and we planted grass seeds. We also made grass person plants as a craft.

Don’t forget that we are having our class Halloween Centers on Friday from 1-2pm.

October 7, 2016
Here are a few highlights of our week:
In math we:
·         Continued with subtraction strategies
·         We used manipulatives, number line, counting backwards

In reading we:
·         Reached 12 minutes of reading independently
·         Picked reading spots throughout the classroom

In writing we:
·         Continued writing about small moments
o   We focused on drawing pictures, adding speech bubbles and labels

In Fundations we:
·         Introduced digraphs (th, wh, ch, sh, ck)
·         Introduced the trick words; as, has, into, to

This week we talked about Christopher Columbus and finished our Junie B. Jones Shipwrecked which involved a play about Christopher Columbus. We also talked a little more about Johnny Appleseed.

On Wednesday, we had a great time at our Ward’s Berry Farm field trip! The boys and girls did a great job listening and had a blast! Thank you to our chaperones!

On Thursday, we had Pj and stuffed animal day!

September 30th


September 30, 2016

We had a great last week of September.  Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
·         Introduced subtraction
·         Using a number line, our fingers, and drawing a picture are a few strategies we used.

In reading we:
·         Reached 10 minutes of reading independently
·         Focused on building our reading stamina
·         Picked books that are ‘just right’ for us
·         Took home book bags for the first time

In writing we:
·         Continued writing about small moments
o   We focused on adding details, stretching out words to spell them

In Fundations we:
·         Began tapping out words
·         Introduced the trick words; a, and, his, is, of, the
·         Had our first check-in (test)

On Friday, the class planted lavender seeds to continue their progress in our plant unit.

Thank you so much for turning in your field trip permission slips! Everyone handed them in on time!

Our field trip is this coming Wednesday. Please make sure to pack a peanut free snack.

September 23, 2016
We had a great second full week of school!  Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
·         Talked about the different strategies for solving an addition problem
·         Learned how to play a few different math games

In reading we:
·         Worked on reading independently without talking for 8 minutes
·         Focused on building our reading stamina
·         Picked books that are ‘just right’ for us

In writing we:
·         Continued writing about small moments

In Fundations we:
·         Began tapping out words
·         Introduced the trick words; a, and, his, is, of, the
In Science and Social Studies, we talked about plants and Johnny Appleseed and what he did for our country.

Please remember that next week the field trip permission slips are due WEDNESDAY, PTO fundraisers can come back when you’re done with them and picture day is THURSDAY.

The annual teacher vs police softball game is THURSDAY night.  Come cheer me and the other teachers on! More information was sent home today from the office.

This week we had a full 5 great days of school!  Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
·         Counted different groups of objects
·     Began learning different strategies for soling addition problems 

In reading we:
·         Began to share our favorite books with the class
·
·        Worked on reading independently without talking for 5 minutes

In writing we:
·         Introduced narrative or small moment stories
       We began writing small moment stories

In Fundations we:
·         Introduced all of the lower and uppercase letters

       *In science we began our plant unit. We talked about what plants need and did a science craft.

*Last week we began student interviews.  This gives us a chance to get to know every student in the class. The students draw the student of the day and then a mini book is made for the student to bring home.

This week we had four great days of school!  Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
·         Counted different groups of objects
·         Played number bingo
·         Introduced number of the day
·         Learned how to do math calendar

In reading we:
·         Began to share our favorite books with the class
·         Discussed the three ways to read a book
·         Worked on reading independently without talking for 3 minutes

In writing we:
·         Introduced narrative or small moment stories.  We began thinking about small moments in our lives

In Fundations we:
·         Introduced baby echo and the letter b, f, t, i, o, u, c, m and n.
·         Next week we will introduce the rest of the letters

*Last week we began student interviews.  This gives us a chance to get to know every student in the class. The students draw the student of the day and then a mini book is made for the student to bring home.

*The boys and girls filled the pom pom jar by the end of the day on Friday!  They earned a Magic School Bus video to celebrate!  Ask them how they earn pom poms.

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Concluded adding and subtracting with 2 digit numbers
-Began working on geometry by reviewing plain and solid shapes

In reading we:
-Focused on retelling the important parts of a story

In writing we:
-Began writing our opinion, we started with our opinion on ice cream and favorite part of school

In Fundations we:
-Finished up unit 13 and had a check in

Next week we have field day on Friday!  Parents are invited to come and watch their child participate in the events.  There will be more information to come as we set a schedule for the day.

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Introduced adding and subtracting with 2 digit numbers
-Continued working on word problems

In reading we:
-Focused on retelling the important parts of a story

In writing we:
-Began writing Book Reviews and stating our opinion

In Fundations we:
-Reviewed two syllable words and introduced adding suffixes to them
-Introduced the trick words: first, good, look, work, word, write, new

We tie dyed our tshirts with the help of Mrs. Greaney and Mrs. Kane on Tuesday!  We can’t wait to wear them next month during field day.

May 6th

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Reviewed ways to make 10
-Introduced finding the ten when adding three numbers
-Introduced how to borrow to make a ten (ex: 9 + 4 can be made into 10 + 3 = 13)
-Worked on missing addend problems within 20

In reading we:
-Focused on the main idea of a story.

In writing we:
-Worked on finishing up our All About stories and began to publish.
-We worked on publishing our pieces

In Fundations we:
-Reviewed two syllable words
-Introduced the trick words: want, people, Mr., Mrs., month, own

On Wednesday we went to the Biome center!  We had a great time petting the sharks, horseshoe crabs and stingray. They even let us feed the horseshoe crabs and sharks!

Thank you to Mrs. Logan, Mrs. Chavers, Mrs. McDuff and Mr. Barros for coming in to help us publish our stories!

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Introduced time, the students are responsible for identifying coins and knowing how much they are worth
-We have done a bit of mixed coin counting but they do not need mastery of this concept in first grade

In reading we:
-This week we focused on making connections in other texts

In writing we:
-Continued writing All About pieces. Worked on thinking about our audience when writing

In Fundations we:
-Introduced long vowel sounds
-Our sight words for this week were another, other, nothing, none, friend

March 14th-18th

March 18, 2016

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Continued learning about time (telling time to the hour and half hour, writing the time, and drawing the hands on a clock to show the time)

In reading we:
-This week we focused on making connections in our text to our life.
-Began reading poetry

In writing we:
-Continued writing All About pieces. Worked on making sure we have an introduction and ending

In Fundations we:
-Introduced –ed and –ing suffixes
-Our sight words for this week were any, many, out, about, our, down

On Tuesday, The Children’s Museum from Easton visited our school to each our class about sound.  The boys and girls were able to try four sound stations and even make an instrument to bring home!  On Friday, Colleen’s mom came in to read a story to the boys and girls for Colleen’s birthday.

Our class has done an AWESOME job fundraising for our playground/Boosterthon!  We have raised over $30 PPL (pledge per lap) for the class!  The boys and girls have earned a sticker, board game time, crazy sock day and extra recess!! Over the weekend and into next week they will be working for a ½ hour video and no homework!
