December 11th

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Learned about patterns in a hundreds chart
-worked on filling in missing numbers
-Reviewed place value which we learned last week

In reading we:
-Began visualization.  We play a movie or mental images in our head while we’re reading so we can better understand the story

In writing we:
-Wrote a book report
-Continued to write small moment stories

In Fundations we:
-Learned the –ang, -ing, -ong, and –ung glued sounds
-We also introduced these sight words: try, my, by, why, put, two

We also learned about skeletons of animals, about spiders and the life cycle of a pumpkin in our Scholastic News.

Thank you for helping your children with the book report assignment.  We finished our book reports today and they are hanging on our bulletin board.

Don’t forget conferences are Tuesday night and Friday afternoon next week.

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Had a check-in on Friday and they all did great!
-Reviewed our unit for the test on Friday

In reading we:
-Discussed retelling a story using transition words, characters, and main idea

In writing we:
-Throughout the week we met to discuss pieces of writing the boys and girls would like to publish in their books
-On Friday we published our pieces into our writing book

In Fundations we:
-Learned about the suffix -s
-We also introduced these sight words: do, does, have, from

We also learned Thanksgiving and what we are thankful for.

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Introduced missing addends with subtraction and began using Reflex Math on the computer

In reading we:
-Discussed strategies for how to be a good partner when reading
-Discussed major and minor characters

In writing we:
-Worked hard on our small moments pieces and adding details
-We worked on editing our writing and adding speech bubbles

In Fundations we:
-Had a check-in on Friday.
-We also introduced these sight words: do, does, have, from
-Learned the glued sounds -an and -am

We also learned about Veteran's Day and began talking about Thanksgiving and what we are thankful for.

November 2nd-6th

November 6, 2015

I cannot believe it is the first week in November! The boys and girls have already worked so hard and have really begun to shine!

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Introduced missing addends and learned strategies for solving them ( 2 + ___ = 6)

In reading we:
-Added new tools to help decode words into our reading toolboxes

In writing we:
-Wrote letters to the soldiers overseas and sent them with the donated Halloween candy.  We even got a picture back from them and I was told it made his day!

-We wrote speeches to become the president of the classroom!
-We worked on editing our writing and adding speech bubbles

In Fundations we:
-Had a check-in on Friday.
-We also introduced these sight words: you, your, one, said, they
-Learned the glued sound -all and bonus letters f, l, s, and sometimes z

Reminder: There is NO school on Wednesday.

October 23, 2015

The class earned all of their pom poms this week which allowed them to have a stuffed animal day and earn a quick movie for the end of the day!  Everyone looked their best on picture day!

Here are a few things we learned this week:

In math we:
-Learned a rap to help us with our doubles facts
-Began fact families

In reading we:
-Built a toolbox for our reading strategies, we will be continuing to add to it next week

In writing we:
-Continue to work on our narrative stories.  We focused on small moments.  A few more students were able to share this week. Introduced using a stapler and challenge paper at our writing shelf.
-Wrote about what we are being for Halloween

In Fundations we:
-Had a check-in on Friday.
-We also introduced these sight words: he, she, we, be, me, for, and or.

In science we:
Continued to watch our brassica seeds grow.  We began a science experiment using white carnations and food coloring.
Watched a clip about the life cycle of a plant and then played a game

I am still looking for one more volunteer to come in on Friday, October 30th from 1:15-2:15 to help with a Halloween center.

We may have had a short week but we did a lot! Here are a few things we did this week:

In math we:
-Learned how to add and subtract using a number line
-Worked on decomposition up to 10

In reading we:
-Finished our first unit of reading workshop, next unit we will be working on decoding words to help us read

In Fundations we:
-Had a review week.  We reviewed CVC words, digraphs, and writing sentences.
-We also introduced these sight words: he, she, we, be, me, for, and or.

In science we:
-Trimmed our grass and brought it home.  Continued to watch our brassica seeds grow.  We began a science experiment using white carnations and food coloring.
-Made a craft involving what plants need


We also celebrated James' birthday this week!

James' dad came in to read to the class for his birthday!

Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
*Reviewed decomposition using a ten frame and whole-part-part board
*Worked on decomposing numbers up to 10
*Worked on word problems

In reading we:
*Began partner reading
*Discussed how to be a good listener for our partners
*Picked perfect spots for reading
*Read books about pumpkins to correspond with our field trip

In writing we:
*Continue to work on our narrative stories.  We focused on small moments.  A few more students were able to share this week.
*We created a sentence buddy to help us remember important parts of a sentence.  Such as ending parks and a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence.

In Fundations we:
*Introduced digraphs, practiced locating them in words, and had a hunt around the classroom to find the words with digraphs

In science we:
*Continued our plant unit by planting brassica seeds.  We will be using a special light for the plants because they need constant light.  We also measured and trimmed our grass.

Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
*Had Dr. Ribiero in to review math sentences and whole, part, part boards
*Reviewed addition and subtraction problem strategies
*Introduced decomposition

In reading we:
*Continued to share our favorite books with the class
*Began bringing home book bags to read at home
*Learned how to pick a perfect reading spot in the classroom
*Learned how to treat books

In writing we:
*Continue to work on our narrative stories.  We focused on small moments.  A few more students were able to share this week.

In Fundations we:
*Focused on tapping and writing CVC words and writing sentences that were dictated

In science we:
*Continued our plant unit by planting grass seeds.  We created a calendar to track the growth and will be measuring it once it begins to sprout.

Next week we have our field trip to Ward’s Berry Farm on Tuesday.  Please make sure to dress your child appropriately as this is a rain or shine field trip.

September 25, 2015
This week we had our second full week of first grade!  We have already done so much. Here are a few highlights of our week:

In math we:
-Began working on subtraction problems
-Had Dr. Ribiero in to teach us about different types of problems
-Learned how to subtract with horizontal and vertical math problems
-Worked on strategies for subtraction (using our fingers, drawing objects)

In reading we:
-Continued to share our favorite books with the class
-Began reading books at our own level
-Learned how we will be building our reading stamina
-Created rules for Reading Workshop

In writing we:
-Continue to work on our narrative stories.  We focused on small moments.  A few more students were able to share this week.

In Fundations we:
-Began tapping CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words.

In science we continued our plant unit by learning about leaves changing colors and planting apple seeds.  In social studies we continued discussing Johnny Appleseed and learning more about him.

This week we also created our classroom rules. We also earned our first Pajama Day!

I am proud to announce that the teachers won the Teacher vs. Police softball game last night! Thank you to everyone who came out to support us.  The event was huge success and I enjoyed seeing some of you!

This week we had our first full week of first grade!  We have already done so much. Here are a few highlights of our week:
In math we:

·         Worked on writing addition math sentences

·         Practiced addition word problems

·         Learned how to add with horizontal and vertical math problems

·         Learned that with addition, the number order does not matter before the equal sign

·         Worked on strategies for addition (using our fingers, drawing objects, and counting on)
In reading we:
·         Continued to share our favorite books with the class

·         Discussed how everyone reads at a different pace

·         Mentioned how next week we will be beginning reading at our own level

·         Read Audrey’s Tree House and then drew our ideal tree house

·         Drew our favorite reading moment

·         Reviewed using a picture walk to help us with words we do not know
In writing we:
·         Continue to work on our narrative stories.  We focused on beginning, middle and end this week.  A few students got to share their stories and the rest will share next week.
In Fundations we:
·         Finished introducing all of the letters of the alphabet and worked on placing the letters in alphabetic order

·         Next week we will begin tapping.
In science we began our plant unit and also included social studies by discussing Johnny Appleseed.
This week we also had our first computer class.  We had a great first full week!

It was our last full week of school! We had lots of things to do.

This week at school we:

·       Made Father’s Day cards

·       Enjoyed extra recess

·       Watched a Magic School Bus movie about frogs

·       Wrote a lot about ourselves in our All About Me Books which went home on Wednesday for our parents to see

·       Had an end of the year party!

·       Walked to the library to meet Miss Liz and listen to her wonderful and exciting stories!

o   Got new library cards and learned how the book drop works

·       Read Amelia Bedelia’s First Library Card
